This, I decided, is my venetian red period. Something about leaving the underlying rust coloured gesso unpainted gets me all excited. (too arty for my own good). Here is another in the newest series of work. And we are eager to solicit opinions.

I've been meaning to ask you about that ... is that a special gesso, or do you mix the colour into your gesso? ... I LOVE your rusty backgrounds ...
I don't know if you'll check back for the answer, but the gesso is a special one that I buy already tinted. I found it from Daniel Smith, and it is called, not surprisingly, venetian red gesso. I had a few questions about it when I began and found a forum at naturalpigments.com that helped steer me in the right direction. I love the way it alters the colors I choose to apply to my canvas. After working on it I notice that when I have returned to a traditional white gesso my palette loses a little life.
